What is Our Cause?

The Chesapeake Bay is a wonderful local attraction, full of fun and beauty. But what is lurking in the water? You'd be surprised to see how polluted our water is...

In the Northern Virgina and Chesapeake area, we get most of our fresh seafood and supplies from the bay, the more polluted the bay is, the more of a chance your water could go... bad.

Also, we are competing in the Lexus Eco challenge of 2008-09, and we want our site to be the best it can be!

We will be addressing several types of pollution:

1) Garbage/ Waste Pollution: Although commonly seen, it is not okay to dump your trash into the Potomac and other widely popular waterways. (That's right, I'm talking to you!) So what are we supposed to do? How about this: We throw trash into trash and recycle what we can? With the matter of waste, we could make reservoirs specially for waste, or maybe even put our dumps in the dump? Hmm?

2) Sound Pollution: Believe it or not, we pollute with too much sound and energy. Going on a cruise means your waste probably ends up right underneath you. And have you ever noticed that fish tend to swim away when you move a lot? Fish respond to motion so when people cruise by a fishing ship, it is very likely that the fish will swim away from the bait. The less fish and crabs we catch, the less fresh seafood and natural resources we have.

3) Human Interaction: Some may not want to continue reading. But I urge you, go on!
Those darn humans! They mess everything up! Why do people think this?
Here's why:
- We tend to bite off more than we can chew (i.e. cut down too many trees, kill too many fish)
- We pollute in more ways than one. We pollute the air with smoke (Co2/CfC) from cars and factories and from dumping chemicals, waste and trash into our main sources of water.
- We still haven't made water pollution illegal!  Lots of people would stop polluting if it was illegal.
